Both of these relatively new, competing publishers (the former in business for six years, the latter for less than two) currently offer free and very low cost versions of at least three dozen college textbooks between them. Both offer various formats, including online readable, down-loadable and inexpensive (under $40) soft-bound textbooks in a wide range of subject areas from experienced authors. Neither publisher is a household name, but both are well worth a look. State and local governments, as well as public and private universities, would do well to support peer reviewed open source textbooks by providing some incentive for experienced faculty to devote the 3-5 years it takes on average to research, write, edit and finally publish a college textbook. Indeed, I can think of many, many worse uses for some of the as yet unspent federal stimulus dollars as well that will eventually almst certainly be squandered in far less noble (or useful) purposes.
